Nope, me neither!
But how on earth will anyone know who you are if you don’t tell them? Truth is, they won’t. They’ll either make it up, hazard a guess or worse yet – they’ll forget about you completely.
So here it is…
I’m a gin snob, beach bum, book clubber, doting wife but it is likely Personal Brand Strategist that brought you here.
I started my first business when I was 22. Fresh out of university, I headed back to the mighty metropolis of Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. Population 6,000 (on a good day). It was an events and marketing business and before I knew it I was looking after half the social media accounts of businesses in towns and running some pretty major events that still run to this day.
It was hard, it was a steep learning curve but it was also a massive success. Not that I realised it at the time but looking back – how many 23 year olds buy their first house, run their own business, start a networking group and still manage to go out every weekend. Oh how I wish I still had that energy!
After 2 years I jumped on a plane to Australia and haven’t looked back since!
Over the next 7 years I was Marketing & Events Manager at WAFarmers Federation, Marketing & Branding Manager at Study Perth and finally CEO of the RRR Network before starting Relevant.
These were wonderful jobs where I met amazing people who welcomed me to Australia and made it feel like home. One thing they had in common was they were not-for-profits. And something most NFPs have in common is limited resources which is where the personal branding came in.
I was building the reputation, reach and influence of these organisations by strategically building the key people within the organisations (CEOs, Chairs, Presidents etc…). I was building their personal brands.
Not that I had put my finger on this. I went out on my own, started Relevant which was meant to be outsources marketing for SMEs. Still oblivious to the term personal branding even though as I started picking up clients I was putting the same strategies in place – building the impact and influence of the key people in the businesses to market the business. Over and over again…
Fast forward a couple of months and I’ve just discovered podcasts. I am binging on Build Your Network (hosted by someone I now call a friend – Travis Chappel).
His guest was talking about Personal Branding and a light switch goes off. All of a sudden I wake up to the realisation that I am in fact a Personal Brand Strategist not a marketing generalist AND had been for years!
The next day I completely rebranded everything and went 100% into my niche – helping ambitious industry leaders get noticed, get relevant and stay remembered by creating strategies that increase their impact and influence where it matters to them.
And to say I love it would be an understatement!
So, that’s a quick rundown of me.
Just in case it was in fact my gin snobbery that landed you here and not the personal branding… my favourite gin is Isle of Harris. From a beautiful island in Scotland made from local sugar kelp. Served with a slice of grapefruit and some Fever-Tree light tonic (remember 2/3 of your drink is tonic so pick a good one). Just in case you were wondering!
