Your brand when you’re not around
April 20, 2021

Introduction

It’s the end of the day. You’ve covered all items on your to-do list.

You are done!

But are you really? Because physically you aren’t working anymore but that doesn’t mean your personal brand gets a rest.

So while you might be ‘off’ your inbox and notifications are likely still pinging away.

I want to talk to you a bit more about making sure that even when you are sleeping, enjoying a refreshing g&t or out on your bike; your brand isn’t taking some time off!

Your brand doesn’t sleep

Let’s rewind the clock back a little, you turned off your computer, decided on how to spend your free time, got dressed, and journeyed on to a pleasant evening.

Meanwhile, a business owner was still sitting in front of their own computer, thinking of ways to make their business go boom, he googles for marketing agencies and because you made full use of the power of SEO, your business is the first one they find.

After doing some comparisons the customer emails you with a proposition, and you get the notification.

Another scenario: Earlier in the day, during coffee, one of your customers recommends your services to a friend, instead of a card, they send a link to your LinkedIn profile to the friend’s phone.

This friend proceeds to take care of other concerns along the day before coming home, sitting on their couch, and just before firing up Netflix, they remember to text you, and so, another notification rings in your pocket.

Both of these examples only serve to show that, while you may have your attention turned to other matters outside of work, you are always projecting your image as a professional online and people interact with it in their own timing.

You may not even be awake, but human activity remains a constant and people will still be able to find you online and see that you are offering something, (be it content, a product, or a service), that they are interested in, and decide to give you their time and attention.

This decision, however, is entirely based on how you present yourself to them, which is why your personal brand never sleeps.

Make sure all your digital assets are up to date.

So, even while we are sleeping, or on the beach, or playing with our children, people are always seeking either us or someone similar to us and coming into contact with the image of ourselves that we built online.

Our personal brand never sleeps and is always doing its job, so how do we ensure that it does so in the best possible manner? One of the surest ways to do so is ensuring that the four platforms below are always up to date:

  • Website: Make sure that every piece of information presented on the website is still active and that your blog is continually bringing up new and relevant content. It’s also a good idea to ensure that the website’s design is not outdated or hard to navigate so that clients can have the best possible experience while visiting. Unlike other platforms like Facebook or Twitter, you have a great deal of control over the amount and type of information you share on your website, so make sure to exploit that as well.
  • Social media: Everybody is on social media nowadays, therefore, you want to make sure you are constantly building a community and interacting with them.

In order to achieve this, you may also want to keep an eye on what is currently trending be it in the form of hashtags, new platform features, or even memes.

When you apply for a new job, many companies start their selection process by searching the names of their candidates on social media, so it’s also extremely important to ensure that they not only find you but that you are putting out the best about yourself.

  • Google: We’ve touched before on the power of SEO and this point cannot be repeated enough since the very first thing most potential customers will do when looking to hire your services is search for them on Google. But don’t forget to look in the images section. What pictures of you come up. You might want to find the source of old drunken uni pictures and set them to private.
  • Listings: Four basic elements should be available in all your listings: Your name, your address, your phone number, and your website address. This information needs to be constantly kept up to date, otherwise, it won’t really matter if customers can find you or not because they won’t be able to contact you.

Conclusion

Maintaining a good personal brand that is constantly working for you even after you turned off the light over your desk is a project that takes dedication and tact.

That being said, this process doesn’t always need to be hard, and you can always count on professional advice to make the ride smoother.
